Studies by Subject 1964-1985.

The files were collected by John M. Mangum. Mangum served under several titles as staff involved with planning for the Board of World Missions of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA) from 1963-1972 and director for planning of the Division for World Mission and Ecumenism (DWME) of the LCA from 1972-1987. Among Mangum's responsibilities was the oversight of studies made to determine mission philosophy, policy, and procedures. The files represent such studies. The files are arranged alphabetically by subject, and maintain the order in which they were received. For the purpose of maintaining this order, file titles list study writers after the name of the subject or paper, rather than in standard bibliographic order. Studies took the form of consultations, individual studies, surveys, or team projects. When reports were finalized, it was Mangum's responsibility to select a format for presentation to the Board of World Missions or the Management Committee of the DWME (see LCA 28/1/1), and to assist in the determination of whether the reports should be printed and circulated beyond these bodies. The subjects studied were varied. There are multiple files related to the Board of World Missions itself, its objectives, mission statement, and functions; to ecumenism and the policy for determining to which groups to relate; and to the theological basis for mission policy. One of the larger subject files concerns the LCA response to a World Council of Churches paper on baptism, Eucharist, and ministry. While this response encompasses the whole church rather than just the DWME, it pertains to Mangum's position of LCA liaison to the World Council of Churches.
